I continued the theme of cartography, making a large floor map composed of multiple sheets, and two pressed layers of paper to hold inserts, inscribing the whole of the Murray River. The life cycle theme and the Indigenous history were alluded to with a tiny baby's hand across the river in the mountains & ending with a hand’s skeleton at Lake Alexandrina. Soil from the locations was inserted between the layers. Next to each hand (five), an etching was inserted of the location of the grid from the 1977 field trip along the murray creating grids (see above). The etchings are like photographs on a tourist map or postcard. These I made with John Loane of Viridian Press in preparation for the paper work. This was shown in 1979 in a travelling exhibition, 15 Sculptors, beginning at the National Gallery of Australia, then on to Benalla Art Gallery, Warrnambool Art Gallery, Hamilton City Gallery, McClelland Gallery, Wollongong Art Gallery, Mildura Art Centre. Shown in the Adelaide Arts Centre (1983) and Performance Space (1985). On my return to Sydney a reprised version of the Dogwoman artwork was selected for an exhibition in Copenhagen, by Gary Sangster, curator and Director of Artspace. I applied for a studio in Kunstlerhaus Bethanien to continue researching the Dogwoman theme. The second version focused more on religious as well as social and historical ‘evidence’ to prove that relations between dogs and women were the basis of all religions. The idea was to critique the male version of history and religion as a fiction, by creating an alternative fiction. The images are a forest on a hill outside Salt Lake City that resembles a bonsai tree, and a photograph of a fire hydrant ‘speaking’ to a rock. The point of sale structures are arranged so that from one view point all the images face the viewer, then walking around them to the opposite side the images are grouped at different angles so that from one view point they are all blank. Make it stand out Sight Cite Site, is an immersive installation that combines the pure and the abject in a reflection upon our love of pristine nature: how it delights, nurtures, calms and protects us however distanced we may live in Sydney’s urban environments. This artwork is inspired by Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park: research of repeated patterns – fractals – that interconnect all terrestrial, aquatic and geological phenomena in a matrix of ecological interdependence. Using microscopy, that is, electronic magnification that reveals nature’s hidden surfaces, its tactility and structures, combined with photographs of complimentary examples. We ‘crawled all over’ this iconic coastal landscape. From a global perspective, Australia is surrounded by the planet’s trans-ecology, water. The spectre of our irreversible pollution - not by industry, not by wars or nasty agricultural nutrients – hovers over our thoughtless, everyday littering of water. Ocean food chains are polluted by invisible, toxic microplastics, microbeads, plastic junk, killing species, haunting our reflective moments. Where does this pollution come from that may be as big a threat as global warming to the planet’s ecosystems? A plastic bag floats by on the breeze. Friends stub out cigarette butts, flicking them into the gutter. A useless plastic bauble – oops, it fell onto the street. Litter – thoughtless, everyday litter - we must turn this around.
